Three area athletes earn POTW honors

Three area athletes were named either player or co-player of the week in their sports by their respective conferences recently. Fort Scott High School graduates Kaleb DeLaTorre and Jennifer Harrison received honors as did Fort Scott Community College softball player Lauren Scott.

DeLaTorre

DeLaTorre, a 2016 graduate of FSHS, was named one of the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference's baseball Players of the Week for the week of Mar. 6-12. DeLaTorre hit .563, going 9 for 16, with 3 home runs, 5 runs batted in and 7 runs scored as his Neosho County squad (3-5 KJCCC-East, 13-6 overall) took three of four games from Highland in a conference series. DeLaTorre, the Panthers' leadoff hitter and starting second baseman, was 3 for 6 with a home run in the second game of a March 9 doubleheader at Highland. He was 2 for 3 with 2 homers and 2 RBI in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader at Chanute and 3 for 4 with 2 RBI in the second game.

DeLaTorre is seventh in the East in batting average (.444), eighth in slugging percentage (.722) and ninth in on-base percentage (.538).

Harrison

Harrison, also a 2017 FSHS graduate, was named Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week for her performance for Bethel College over the weekend of March 3-4.

Harrison was 6-0 that weekend for the Threshers, 3-0 in both singles and doubles. On March 3, she won both her matches against at Doane, Neb., taking her singles match in straight sets and winning in doubled with partner Kaci Wilson, 8-6.

On March 4, Harrison defeated Concordia's (Neb.) Kirston Wagner in three sets and paired with Wilson to win in doubles, 8-6. Later that day against Saint Mary, Harrison swept Bria Menagh in straight sets and partnered up with Kimberly Buzbee to take the doubles match in a tie-breaker.

That was the opening weekend of play for Bethel, which is 1-4 on the season. The Threshers lost to Doane, 6-3, beat Concordia, 5-4, and lost to Saint Mary, 6-3. They also were swept by Baker University, 9-0, on March 10.

Scott

Scott is a freshman from Kansas City, Mo., who was recognized for her play for the week of Feb. 27-Mar. 5. She got one hit in each of Fort Scott's six games that week and batted .579 for the week, going 11 for 19. Her on-base percentage was .600. She had 4 doubles and 2 home runs among her hit total and drove in 11 runs without striking out once. According to the KJCCC press release, it was the best week by a Fort Scott player in terms of batting average, on-base percentage and slugging percentage in the past five seasons.

For the season, Scott is batting .429, has a .467 on-base percentage and is second in the Eastern Division in slugging percentage at .875. She leads the division with 6 home runs and 27 runs batted in.

Scott was the second Greyhound to be honored this season. Aimee Wimp was chosen following the first week of the season.

The Greyhounds (1-1 East, 11-12 overall) play Neosho County this afternoon at 2 p.m. at the Betty Ruth Willard Complex. Those games were postponed from Tuesday.
